Difficult Light – Great Light

This was one of the more challenging ceremonies with regard to light. As the ceremony began, the lights were dimmed significantly pushing the limits of what the camera could capture. Adding to the challenge, a fog machine filled the hall while a bright spotlight was aimed at the altar. In all, it made for one of the hardest ceremony shoots all year.

On the other hand, the light was dramatic and offered the potential of spectacular images. Just see how dynamic this photo is! The couple is clearly lit while the wedding party is thrown into silhouette. The spotlight adds some direction to the light and guides our eyes directly to the couple. This is a dark photo, but the scene was dark in reality, so it captures the spirit perfectly.

Carol took this photo, not me. I was on the other side of the altar at the time. This is a perfect example of why it can be a bit of an investment to add a second shooter to my Silver Package (the Gold and Signature packages already include two). I don’t just throw a camera in the hands of an intern and call her a second shooter, I only work with photographers who are good in their own right.
